Investment approach

Philosophy

Our investment process is best demonstrated through best in class security selection, sustainability due diligence and ongoing active risk management and review. We believe that our portfolio management team should be directly responsible and accountable for execution of this investment process and the subsequent performance. Each client is assigned a dedicated portfolio manager who takes personal responsibility for the execution of the mandated portfolio. While individual portfolio managers manage and implement client accounts, the investment decisions are made collectively by the wider team to mitigate key-man risk.

Asset allocation

Our sustainable multi-asset class strategies seek to reduce volatility through a well-diversified strategic asset allocation (SAA) across our eight asset class framework, that invests globally across equity, bond and alternative markets (including commodities and alternative trading strategies). The SAA forms the basis of our portfolio construction and reflects our longer term (5+ year) investment and economic views. Our Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA) then overlays our SAA with allocation ‘tilts’ over or underweight, reflecting our shorter term best thinking.

Allocation decisions

The proposed sustainable portfolio is segregated in nature, invested directly in a globally diversified portfolio of sustainable businesses. Our discretionary strategies are, at this time, only available as segregated solutions, which we feel benefits clients through full transparency of your underlying holdings. Given the ticket sizes required for some of the holdings within the portfolio our minimum starting value is typically £5m although this can be adjusted downwards as part of a wider relationship with a client. Funds are utilised in our allocation to High Yield & EM Debt, and EM Equities, where we feel additional diversification is beneficial.

Risk management

Risk management is an integral part of the Investment Team’s responsibility, and risks are monitored on an ongoing basis with support from our Independent Risk Function (IRF). Portfolios are analysed in terms of interest rate exposure (duration, yield curve positioning and relative value), credit ratings, sector and country exposure, as well as providing the opportunity for bottom up analysis of individual positions. Risk budgets are also considered to ensure that the individual strategies are running at an appropriate level of risk.
