Investment approach

Philosophy

M&G offers a wide range of investment fund solutions to the market, with varying philosophies and processes. We have expertise in public and private debt, public and private equity, real estate, and multi asset solutions. All of which will have a unique process that aims to provide positive investment returns.

Asset allocation

Across all asset classes M&G is an active, responsible investor with a key focus on delivering long-term returns via a combination of income and capital. Proposed allocations will be confirmed in more detail within each individual search/RfP response submission, once we have had an opportunity to review the objectives and requirements of individual clients and have settled on the most appropriate fund vehicle(s) to include in our proposal.

Allocation decisions

Via a range of pooled fund solutions spanning equities, public/private credit (bonds), property/real estate, and multi-asset strategies to suit a wide range of client needs.

Risk management

Responsibility for portfolio risk management ultimately lies with the respective fund manager but they are supported in this regard by a dedicated and independent team of risk analysts and monitoring professionals, including individuals who specialise in investment risk within respective asset classes. The risk team is available on a consultative basis to fund managers, but more importantly the function has a separate reporting line into M&G’s Chief Risk Officer. The team runs and maintains risk models that provide in-depth analysis on a variety of absolute and relative measures of risk and other investment metrics. Ongoing risk monitoring is used to ensure a fund is operating within its specified parameters, including constant oversight of fund positioning and measures of sensitivity to core market risk factors and sector, region and issuer concentration levels. In depth, quarterly oversight meetings are part of this process. Any risk breaches are closely examined and escalated to compliance teams and other areas of the business if required.

Example performance

Detailed performance data will be confirmed in more detail within each individual search/RfP response submission, once we have had an opportunity to review the objectives and requirements of individual clients and have settled on the most appropriate fund vehicle(s) to include in our proposal.

M&G was one of the first investment managers to provide a specialist pooled vehicle for charities to invest in equity markets when we launched Charifund in March 1960. Our experience spans over 64 years and, today, we are proud to manage assets for more than 9,000 charities of all shapes and sizes worth a total of £1.2billion across our wide range of fund strategies covering all the major asset classes.

Ethics & ESG

Offers ethical investing
Yes

Yes, our funds exclude companies and countries associated with severe controversies (UNGC/Freedom house). UNGC red flags exclusions are considered a house exclusion. The Global Monitoring team is responsible for the on-boarding, ongoing maintenance and monitoring of contractual and regulatory obligations, and is responsible for ensuring UNGC red flags are excluded. The team provides a review and analysis of prospective business documentation ahead of onboarding. This provides an advisory service with an objective of attaining the highest level of automated and standardised monitoring. There is an increasing demand from the organisation on potential monitoring and capabilities. The team extracts investment restrictions from source documentation (investment management agreement, regulatory schema, prospectus etc.) and codes these restrictions into compliance application of “Aladdin” (this is a Blackrock offering). Aladdin’s compliance application allows for investment compliance monitoring. This automated compliance functionality facilitates pre and post-trade investment portfolio compliance checking. Rules that can be coded include, but not limited to, restrictions such as UCITS(Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities), sectors, countries, specific stocks, etc. The onboarding and maintenance of investment compliance rules within the team undergoes a review process. This review is conducted by another member of the team who has not ‘coded’ those rules. Upon the successful review (completeness and accuracy) the rules are approved within Aladdin. The system configuration requires a different user to approve the rule from the user who coded/amended the rule. 24 Upon the successful coding, review and approval of the compliance rules the source documentation (eg IMA, prospectus) is shared with the Fund Manager who is responsible for ensuring all obligations have been captured. The Fund Manager must provide their sign off.
